A few years ago, i was decaling a slot car and had a reaction between the paint on the body and the solvent i was using to set the decals with.
Here's a summary of my experience, others may differ and may have better ways of clear coating glossy auto subjects:
I have used future floor with great success over enamel paints as a gloss clear coat with out issue. But now i have a car that was decaled about 5 years ago and part of the roof decal is loose and i'm wondering if future as a clear coat might be able to lock it. Be aware that a hand brushed coat will be more shiny as opposed to an airbrushed one (more of a satin gloss) so it will need a dull coat after the decalling to. I do mostly aircraft, but i think the same basics would apply to.

You can use polishing pads on models that you intend to add a clear coat to and those you’ve used real automotive paints, like those from mcw, that you don’t.
